The sterilisation protocol for dental bib holders is sporadic and can lead to the existence of bacteria for example pseudomonas and micro-microorganisms, scientists from Germany have demonstrated. Inside a study, they found bacteria on a lot more than two-thirds of multiple-use bib holders.
The scientists in the Witten/Herdecke College in Witten, Germany, examined 30 metal and plastic bib holders.
“The analyses from the microbial load demonstrated that 70 percent of multiple-use bib holders were contaminated with bacteria. The predominant colony types recognized were staphylococci and streptococci. On several bib chains, we found various microbial rods, pseudomonas, fungi and other kinds of cocci,” stated Prof. Stefan Zimmer, lead investigator from the study and scientific director in the Witten/Herdecke College. “Although the bacteria present in this research counseled me non-pathogenic, in principle multiple-use bib holders can mix-contaminate dental patients.”
The bacteria located on the bib holders really don't cause disease in healthy people, but could be a threat to immunosuppressed patients, in addition to youthful children and also the seniors, who frequently have jeopardized natureal defenses. Bacteria from an unsterilised bib holder can go into the body whenever a patient touches the bib holder or her neck following a dental visit after which rubs a watch or touches the mouth.

Other research has found similar results. Three US studies found unacceptable amounts of microbe contamination on dental bib holders, including pseudomonas, E. coli and S. aureus, the most typical reason for staph infection.
